If you look a little bit into the history of fashion, you’ll see that many of the traditional garments and accessories that famous brands or personalities have turned into trendy, were created as a response to different human needs around the world…
It’s the case of the Panama Hat, which was developed in Ecuador, after a long process of working with the toquilla palm, for people to protect themselves from the sun.
You might ask yourself why it’s called Panama Hat if it was created in Ecuador… Well, the hat was created and is currently produced in Ecuador, but there’s a story about how it being lightweight and fresh made it perfect for the workers of the construction of the Panama Canal, which generated a great demand of hats there… Then, the President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, was photographed using one of the hats during his visit to the construction of the canal, in 1906, and that event shot up the popularity of the product internationally, making people think it was a “Panama Hat”.
So, Panama Hat is the name that became famous around the world: many brands have created their own styles, Hollywood personalities have used them and it’s known to be a high quality product with an important cultural background that made the Panama Hat a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012.
We love the story behind the Panama Hat and that’s why rural Colombian communities, especially in the municipality of Aguadas, produce the Panama Hats that you can find in our stores today. Our hats keep the essence of this valuable process and, at the same time, have the OndadeMar touch: colors, ribbons and different details have created our own Panama Hat style!
